We headed to the airport at 4:45pm. So-Yun Jeong's flight was scheduled to arrive at 5:25pm at TIA.
We were anxious as we didn't know which airline the students were coming in on. As we entered the airport lobby it was immediately evident where we needed to be. There was a large crowd of about 80 people, waiting. It was a great mixture of age, race, family type, hosting experience and excitement!!! Some students had even made welcome posters.
The top 3 students, Naysia, Bandria, and Lulu stood around and giggled nervously. Everytime someone came down the stairs we wondered if it was them. While we waited, a young man proposed to a young lady. She said yes and we all cheered.
Soon after that a large group of students and a few adults walked down the stairs. The lobby echoed our cheers. All 41 of them stood in 2 rows, bowed and said "An-yeong-ha-se-yo".....hello. We, in unison, bowed and said hello.
We all frantically attempted to read name tags in order to find "our" student, but Ann had a plan. Once they collected their luggage the students lined up. Ann would ask their name, call out the respective host family name, they would then move to the side to have their picture taken.
About 20 minutes into the process, The Powell family was called. We hurried over to meet So-Yun!!! She was very polite, bundled up in a pink jacket, with a suitcase almost as big as she is. We were the last of the "Top 3" to be called. All of them squeezed in for a picture and we were on our way.
We left the airport, went to Target then came home. When asked what she was hungry for she said pizza. We ordered in and had a picnic in the living room. The fireplace blazed, pizza was inhaled, and we communicated via Google Translator. She and Naysia talked some, both in English and Korean.
Tonight they are both in Naysia's bed at So-Yun's request. And I'm high 5'in myself for going with it :)
